On November 22, 2016, a federal judge in Texas put a halt to implementation of the US Department of Labor’s new overtime rule, at least for now. The new rule would have doubled the salary level required for employees to be classified as exempt from overtime pay requirements under the “White Collar” exemptions. The judge agreed with a coalition of state Attorneys General and businesses that key elements of the new rule were unlawful and put a stop to the rule just days before the planned implementation date of December 1, 2016, pending further decisions from the judge. The DOL has appealed the ruling.
