Obtained through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Complete Form OP-1. There is a one-time $300 application fee.
Within 60-days of receiving their MC# from FMCSA, a broker must obtain a surety bond or trust fund from a bank or bonding company. The cost varies depending on your personal credit.
Brokers are required to carry a $75,000 bond or trust. TIA offers the TIA Bond at the $75,000, $100,000, and $250,000 levels. Apply for a free quote today.

As a part of initial start-up costs, a broker must have cash or available credit to pay carriers. Shippers may not pay for services from 60 – 90 days. Typically, brokers should plan on having access to a minimum of $250,000 in cash or credit.
All broker applicants must designate a process agent in each State in which offices are located and in which contracts will be written. Process agents who will accept legal filings on the applicant’s behalf are designated on FMCSA Form BOC-3.
Form BOC-3 must be filed within 90 days after the date notice of the application is published in the FMCSA Register.
TIA has an agreement in place with Logistec/TTS to file the BOC-3 on behalf of our Members to streamline this process to 30-days.
Freight broker activities are under the jurisdiction of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the successor to the Interstate Commerce Commission.
The FMCSA defines a broker as “a person who, for compensation, arranges, or offers to arrange, the transportation of property by an authorized motor carrier.”
Brokers are required to submit an annual filing of information required within the Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) Agreement. The annual filing fee for 2021 is $59.00.
Chris Jolly
Chris has 15+ years of experience within transportation with the bulk of his experience in freight brokerage. He is the founder of Freight Coach Enterprises and the host of “Coffee w/#TheFreightCoach” podcast. His experience within freight brokerage includes operations, sales, and leadership ranging from start-ups to one of the largest brokerages within transportation. His passion is training and development of sales and operations professionals within transportation.
Benjamin Kowalski is a Business Coach with over 17 years of experience in sales, leadership, and management. He has been recognized for demonstrating a natural aptitude for developing relationships. As well as sales and growth result in every position he’s held.
He’s maintained ranking within the top 5% of 5,700 companywide brokers throughout his tenure as a Senior Logistics Account Executive. And established books of business through cold calling to exceed $4.2 million in under 24 months.
His purpose is to innovate and inspire others to reach their potential, by providing education, information, and training. So that all parties can operate with a higher level of confidence, efficiency, and understanding.
His Clients & Colleagues describe him as a progressive, driven, down-to-earth, an organizational and interpersonal expert who can be relied on to offer superior solutions that deliver profitable results. His average client sees their sales increase over 25% in their first year.
Nate Cross began his logistics career in the U.S. military and continues to serve as a logistics officer in the Army National Guard. In 2012 he joined Con-Way Freight (XPO Logistics) as a freight operations supervisor. He transitioned into third-party logistics as a business development specialist with Logistic Dynamics, Inc. in 2014.
He started a podcast focused on freight brokering in 2019 called “The Midnight Freight Broker” to start a fun and educational conversation about the world of freight. He joined forces with Ben in 2020, and they rebranded the venture to “Freight 360.”
His career focuses on working with independent freight agents to develop and grow their business books under the umbrella of a larger freight brokerage. In 2020, Nate joined Pearce Worldwide Logistics, where he currently serves as the Vice President of Agent Development & Services.
